Salem IL Concrete Finishing and Staining
Concrete is an extremely durable product that can last a lifetime. Using good quality products to finish the concrete will increase the service life of your concrete. A cure and seal product can be used the same day the concrete is placed, or you can apply a high-quality sealer one month after the concrete is placed. Exterior concrete sealers can last anywhere from 1 to 5 years, depending on environmental conditions. Occasional cleaning with soap and water is also advised to keep your concrete looking its best. Sealing and regular maintenance will also minimize the chances of discoloration caused by natural or man-made contamination.
We use both acid-based chemical stains and water-based acrylics. Both types of stain can be applied to new or old and plain or colored concrete. Stains are very effective for revitalizing dull, lackluster surfaces and offer excellent UV stability and wear resistance, permitting their use on interior or exterior concrete. |

Acid stains work by penetrating the surface and reacting chemically with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete. The acid in the stain lightly etches the surface, allowing the metallic salts to penetrate more easily. Once the stain reacts, it becomes a permanent part of the concrete and won't fade, chip or peel away. The palette for acid-etch staining is generally limited to earthy tones, such as tans, browns, terra cottas and soft blue greens.

Water-based stains are available in dozens of standard colors, including black and white and metallic tints. Like acid stains, water-based stains penetrate the concrete to produce permanent color, ranging from translucent to opaque. Decorative glass or stone can be added to the mix to create a beautiful stone-like appearance. We recommend stains for walkways and patios, interior floors, kitchen countertops, walls and fireplaces and patios. Staining imparts a luxurious richness that can't be achieved by any other coloring medium. Rather than produce a solid, opaque effect like paint, stains permeate the concrete to infuse it with luminous, translucent tones that vary depending on the surface they are applied to and the application techniques used. Stains can mimic everything from polished marble to tanned leather to natural stone or wood. No matter what you envision for your project, we can meet your needs.

If your home or business has existing concrete subfloors, exposing them and applying a decorative treatment is an affordable and environmentally friendly option. When properly sealed your floor will resist moisture, last for more than 50 years and resist stains. A concrete floor is pet friendly, reduces allergens in the home, can be heated with a radiant system and is free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
As shown here, we can also do an epoxy flake coating on your floors. This option is very durable and long-lasting. It is stain and water resistant, slightly textured for slip resistance, and comes in a wide variety of colors, so you can match nearly any decor!
Although most concrete stains and coloring methods are very long-lasting and wear-resistant, weathering, sun exposure, improper color application, and absorption of grease and oil stains can damage the stain. The good news is that in most cases the concrete color can be revived by applying a new coat of acid or water-based stain. Using a UV-resistant staining product and protecting the concrete with a good sealer, your newly colored exterior project should maintain its beauty for many years. We look forward to working with you to make your home or business look its best and outlast the rest! Give us a call!
